  • Most people love to go on holiday. Some of us go many times a year, some go only once in a long, long time. Still, we may spend a lot just to prepare for the trip, including buying a new and expensive camera. What a waste if those precious moments escape, not because you don't have a camera, but because you don't have the know-how. Remember: cameras are made to obey their owners. No matter how good and expensive a camera you buy, it cannot perform in the hands of a weakly skilled owner. The Travel Photography Workshop gives you the opportunity to acquire the skills so that your travel shots become treasured shots.

My name is Tim. Some of you may have already known me from my travel websites, AsiaExplorers, EarthDocumentary, WorldGreatestSites and the Tim's Travel Tips Series, Penang, London, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Macau. With thousands of photos on the web, in travel books, calendars and other media, I am often asked for travel photography tips. Since travel photography is a fun and fascinating subject, and I do want the maximum number of people to benefit from it, I decided to start this website, Travel Photography Workshop, to offer free photography tips to travel enthusiast.

I hope that through this website, Travel Photography Workshop, I can help you improve your photographic skills, making you even more proud of your shots. I acknowledge that there are many professional photographers out there who are just as experienced. Each has his own style and technique. Some are technical perfectionists. I am not.

You will notice that the tagline of this website says "Travel photography is not about numbers. It's about pure pleasure". That very much encapsulates my idea about photography. What do I mean that it's not about numbers? Well, in this course I will teach you the basics such as aperture, f/stops, depth-of-field, ASA, and stuff like that. And then, I will tell you to toss them aside. Okay, remember them, but don't let them get in the way of your pleasure. To me, travel photography is about having fun on your holidays. You see, some photos can be technically perfect and yet lack soul. That's not what I want to see on your shots. I want to see photographs that exude photographic exuberance. Like cooking. Some of the best chefs in the world don't care about measurements - if it's not salty enough, add salt. A sprinkle here, a dash there, go by gut feeling. That's how I do it, and on this website, I want to teach you to do the same. You can have a barrel of fun, and produce fantastic shots!

I love photographs that look natural. On the other hand, I have nothing against photo enhancements. I do not discourage people from enhancing their photographs, as long as the result does not look artificial. As far as I am concerned, you may increase the saturation, contrast, sharpness, etc., you may crop your photo, you may even remove an unsightly twig or power line, but I don't encourage adding things to your shot that wasn't there, ie adding a bird to a flower. That, I acknowledge, is also art, but it's not my style of photography.

There will be four main sections to this website. The first is called Techniques. This is where I teach you stuff like composition, depth-of-field, and the likes. The next section is called Samples. Here, I show you travel photographs that I have taken, and describe how I took them. The third section is called Photo Clinic. You send in your questions here, and I answer them. You can also submit your shots for evaluation. The fourth section is called Member Gallery. You can submit your favourite shots and I'll showcase the best ones.

Lastly, don't let my style dictate you. I don't want you to go into a box saying, "Oh no, Tim doesn't do that, so I shouldn't too." I may tell you what I do and don't, but I encourage you to develop your own style. Travel Photography Workshop is not a factory for me to clone myself - I want to see your own style developing. At the end of the day, travel photography is about the pleasure of traveling and creating memorable images.

    Remember, it's pure pleasure!
