The Nikon D3 is a 12.1-megapixel professional full frame (35mm) digital single-lens-reflex (dSLR) camera announced by Nikon Corporation on 23 August 2007. The D3 is the top model in Nikon's line of DSLRs. It takes over from the D2Hs and D2Xs. The D3 is Nikon's first full frame dSLR. It uses a CMOS image sensor measuring 23.9 x 36.0 mm. This sensor is different and bigger than the existing DX format sensors employed on all the previous Nikon dSLRs, and Nikon has come up with the name "FX" to describe it. The FX sensor has larger pixels and is more sensitive to light than the DX sensors. It allows the camera to reach higher ASA speeds and still produce images with less noise in low-light situations, including challenging situations when the camera is operated on high shutter speed or high f-number, when the lens' aperture is reduced to improve depth of field and sharpness.

The Nikon D3's grip and body were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign. It still uses the Nikon F-mount, allowing compatibility with older Nikon lenses. The D3 can taje 9 frames per second in FX format and 11 fps in DX format. Its high-resolution LCD screen is also regarded as much better than that of other cameras.
