The Nikon D40 is the entry-level digital SLR camera from Nioon. It is also the most compact and least expensive of Nikon's Nikon's entry-level digital SLR. The D40 was announced by Nikon on November 16, 2006. It is a simplified version of the D50. With the reduction in features, Nikon was able to bring out the D40 at a recommended retail price of US$600 with an accompanying by a new small kit lens, the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II.
Comparing it with other cameras of the same range, the Nikon D40 is less expensive and has slightly fewer features than the Canon EOS 400D (which is also known as Digital Rebel XTi in U.S.), the Pentax K110D, and the Olympus E-400.
